A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

                                        .

Hudson Lazuka “reading” the bulletin during the Sunday
morning worship service!

Study The Bible On Sunday Mornings  at 9:07am in the Fireplace Room.  We start by reading aloud a chapter from St. Paul’s fascinating epistle to the Romans.  Then an open discussion follows, guide4d by Fr. Phil.  Come and try it out this Sunday.

Canned Goods are being collected in a hallway basket. Everything gathered goes directly to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry to help Grosse Ile families. This collection is perpetual and ongoing. Please feel free to donate nonperishable foods to help the cause at any time. Maybe get in the habit of buying something extra when you do your own grocery shopping?

Old Testament Video Class  On February 6th our Thursday study group begins a DVD video series on the Old Testament. In each session we will begin by watching a 25-minute video of world-renowned Jewish Biblical scholar Dr. Amy-Jill Levine teaching about a major Old Testament story. Passages will include the Creation, the Passover, the conquest of the land of Canaan, the reign of David, and much more. Open discussion follows. Led by Fr. Phil these programs require no advanced preparation, no reading ahead, and no commitment. We will be watching these videos on Thursday mornings at 10:30am in the Library throughout the seasons of Lent and Easter. Come as you are able!

Attention Woodworkers! Our children’s program needs your help. To help our children understand and engage the worship space we are looking to make a mini altar, pulpit and lectern sized for 5-7 year olds. Having you make one with your own hands would be an incredible gift to future generations of little ones. Please reach out to our Director of Children’s Ministries, Erica Benson at ericabenson101@gmail.com or 231-690-9655.

A Special Lenten Children’s Program called “Godly Play” will begin on Sunday, March 1st and run for 6 weeks though Palm Sunday. Godly Play is a story-based, hands-on, experiential Montessori-method of teaching children that engages them on their own level and encourages creative play and understanding. The program will be held after communion until noon, during the time when we are currently hosting children’s crafts. For more information see Erica Benson.

A Kid’s St. Valentine’s Party is planned for Saturday, February 15th from 10am to 12noon. A light brunch will be offered. There will be games, stories, a craft, and most important, lots of LOVE!

We are Collecting Palms from last year to be burned for Ash Wednesday ashes. If you want to turn in your palms, please bring them to the main office. Get your new palms on Palm Sunday, April 5, 2020.

A Get-To-Know Bishop Bonnie Dinner will be held at Saint James on Wednesday, February 12 from 6:30 to 8:30pm in Galloway Hall. If possible, please bring a dish to share. Our bishop is making it a priority to visit every worshipping community in the diocese this year. This is our chance to visit with her. Time will made to hear from our new bishop (she will have been consecrated only 4 days earlier!). She also dearly wants to hear from us. To help coordinate the finer details of this dinner please speak with Fr. Phil or Blanche Hutchison our Senior Warden.

Bishop Bonnie’s Consecration is planned for February 8. All are welcome to join in the celebrations:

  • will occur on Saturday, February 8, at the Ford Performing Arts Center in Dearborn. Doors open at 9am, processions begin at 10:30am, the liturgy begins formally at 11am, and a reception begins at 1pm. Seats are first-come-first-served. Fr. Phil strongly encourages you to arrive early to ensure you find a seat.
  • will be held on Friday, February 7, at “The Henry” in Dearborn from 6:30pm to 10pm so you can greet the bishop elect. Hors d’oeuvres will be served early in the evening and dancing will happen later in the evening.
  • of the 11th Bishop of Michigan will be held on Sunday, February 9, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Detroit as part of their 11am worship service.

The Grosse Ile Animal Shelter is Hosting a fundraiser for the shelter on February 22nd, 2020. It is a Mardi Gras style event at Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. Out There With Outreach:

Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen Snow Storm, Jan. 18, 2020.  St. James & friends “Carried On” inspite of a snow storm on Jan 18th.  It took awhile to make it downtown to prepare the meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen.  but we did. After all, people would still be hungry inspite of the weather and we were not going to let them down.   Our diehard crew was composed of Dave Christie and his donation of 30 lb of hamburger.  Chi Paik & his daughter Meredith Paik made all of the sandwiches and more throughout the day.  Dave Rudziensky & His daughter Julie Rudziensky brought coats and boots they had collected at work, as well as cooking & serving. Huge thanks to Tom Coleman who came when others were not able to because of the weather. Our new friend at St. James, Sarah Tribelhorn, and good ole (young) Lynda VanEngelen all came to cook and serve & clean up… We were a small but mighty group!

EVERYONE WHO CAME, did many jobs and stayed for the whole day; as we were so shorthanded.  Interesting thing, it was assumed by Spirit of Hope that we would not be coming, due to the snow and poor driving conditions.  All the lights were out and signs were posted  around the church stating that there would be “no lunch today”.  I called Pastor Estes & his fiancée Brittany.  She told me how to turn the lights on & then they both came to the church to change the signs and shovel the snow!  The 2 Daves had done the “drive back & forth trick” to fix it so we could get into the parking lot to unload the food & supplies.  We were able to get the lunch ready in time (Taco soup with lots of veggies & macaroni, hot corn bread, bowls of fruit, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches to go, hot coffee, and juice).  Erica Benson sent bags of candy for dessert.  Tables & the floors were cleaned before and after the meal, thank you Linda V & the others.  It was a busy day but all went well,  We served 80 guests who were well fed and we have enough left-overs to feed more people on our next turn.

THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!!!  Amy & Frank Kohair
