The United Thank Offering (UTO) has been an important ministry of the Episcopal Church since1889, providing a way for members of all ages to give daily thanks to God.  The mission of UTO is to distribute funds through grants to individuals and communities in need of financial support in our diocese, our nation and the world.  Everyone is encouraged to take home a “little blue box”.  Kept in a prominent place, it is a reminder to say a prayer of thanks and drop in coins in gratitude for God’s blessings.  Boxes are available throughout the church. A box in-gathering will be held later this year. Your change can change lives.  Thank you! Wendy Kiblawi 248-476-0265

This past Wednesday Fr. Phil participated in an intensive diocesan training day led by Hebrew Scriptures scholar, The Rev. Dr. Judy Fentress-Williams, of Virginia Theological Seminary. Over the course of four hour-long sessions the group of 40 explored the significance of a “dialogical” approach to scripture. The term, based on the word “dialog,” means that scripture rarely says a single thing on a topic, but often says seemingly opposite things, often in the same book by the same author. Consider Proverbs 26:4-5 – “Do not answer fools according to their folly, or you will be a fool yourself. Answer fools according to their folly, or they will be wise in their own eyes.” What some call contradictions are actually different “voices” in the text in dialog with each other. Thus scripture rarely presents a single voice or commandment, but speaks in many voices; truth is thus found through the dialog, which includes also the reader and the community. This approach was then applied to the Book of Ruth, to explore the meaning and significance of the Outsider, and how a member of the scripturally-hated Moabites (Ruth) was not only invited into the Israelite Community, but actually was adopted through a significant marriage to become the great-grandmother of King David, and the many-times great grandmother of Jesus himself. Curious? Ask Fr. Phil, to hear more.

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

This morning’s musical point of interest: Ralph Vaughan Williams was one of Britain’s most important composers, and was an enormous contributor to the Anglican Church. In addition to a monumental amount of hymns and choir anthems, he also wrote 9 Symphonies and several excellent song cycles, among other things. Vaughan Williams was extremely influenced by the folk music of great Britain, often quoting folk melodies in his compositions.
